The highest-grade coffee among the world’s top three brands: Hawaii Kona.

This refers to coffee grown in the famous Kona district on the island of Hawaii.

As a Hawaiian coffee brand ourselves, we are very passionate about Kona coffee. (laughs)

Because it is top quality and requires no unnecessary blending, we sell only 100% Kona!

Respecting the raw material, we differentiate ourselves through the farms we source from, the grades, and our roasting methods.

Please enjoy a cup at the highest level—Kona production accounts for only about 0.01% of the world’s coffee.

Kona Coffee Bean Grades

You might think Kona coffee is just one type.

In fact, the state of Hawaii officially classifies Kona coffee into the following seven grades.

RankGrade NameCharacteristics
1Extra FancyTop grade. Large beans with almost no defects.
2FancySlightly smaller but still high quality.
3No.1Upper-mid grade. Stable quality.
4SelectMore defects and less uniformity in bean size.
5PrimeThe lowest official grade that can be labeled as “Kona.”
6No.3Outside standard but popular as Hawaiian coffee.
7Off GradeLow-quality beans for blends or commercial use.
OtherPeaberryA rare bean, accounting for only about 4% of the total. Treated separately.

Under Hawaii rules, the five grades from Extra Fancy through Prime may be sold as “100% Kona coffee.”

So even if a product is labeled “100% Kona,” remember that there is a wide range in quality.

Also, for Kona blends containing 10% or more Kona, it is common for No.3 or Off Grade beans to be used, so choosing by price alone can be risky.

Although No.3 and Off Grade should not be labeled “Kona coffee,” because Kona is so valuable, such products unfortunately do appear on the market.

Hawaii Kona Offered by Waikiki Coffee

We primarily use the No.1 grade.

The farm from which we purchase designates its own grade called “Private Reserve,” which corresponds to No.1.

We choose No.1 because it offers very consistent flavor and a good balance in terms of price.

Extra Fancy and Fancy are of course excellent, but they tend to become premium-branded and we find the balance of price and taste less favorable.

Therefore, Waikiki Coffee’s Kona is intended to be a cost-effective option among the world’s top three brands.

Since we source directly from the farm, our strength is offering “high quality at a reasonable price.”
